Another worthy guitar tuner : http://www.tictone.com
Great post. I have yet to find an 'active' online guitar tuner, that is, one that takes the sound from your guitar and tells you whether you need to tune up or tune down. Now this doesn't mean they don't exist, the technology is certainly available, but from my brief research I haven't found one. So, as far as an online guitar tuner goes, we'll have to settle for a passive one and the ones above are great for this.
You just need to know the basics of how to tune your guitar. It's recommended that you really only use the online guitar tuners if you're just playing by yourself or need a quick tune-up before you start practicing. In a band situation you need to not only be in tune musically but you also need to be in tune with the other musicians, in that case an online guitar tuner would not really work.
Thanks for the great comment Mark! I think a guitar tuner like that would be pretty awesome to be honest. Like you say it's also a completely different skill to know when your out of tune in a live music situation (i.e. a band) and having the ability to quickly tune your guitar without ruining your performance requires skills and experience.
